Procedure
Medical Abortion in Austria
Medical abortion (often referred to as the “abortion pill”) is a safe, gentle, and proven method to terminate an early-stage pregnancy without surgery. In Austria, this procedure is legal within the framework of statutory period limits (Fristenlösung) and is performed directly at our practice.
Prerequisites and Timeframe
Timeframe: A medical abortion is medically possible up to the end of the 9th week of pregnancy (or up to the 63rd day after the first day of the last menstrual period).
Consultation: Prior to treatment, a comprehensive and confidential consultation takes place at our practice, where we answer all your questions and determine the exact stage of pregnancy (usually via ultrasound).
The Procedure at Our Practice
The treatment takes place in two consecutive steps:
Step 1: Taking the First Medication (Mifepristone)
- At the practice: You take the first medication directly on-site at our practice.
- How it works: This active ingredient blocks the pregnancy hormone progesterone. As a result, the growth of the pregnancy stops, and the uterine lining prepares for expulsion.
- What you feel: Some women experience mild, period-like cramps or light spotting. However, you can generally continue your daily routine during this phase without restrictions.
Step 2: Taking the Second Medication (Prostaglandin)
- At Home or at the Practice: Approximately 36 to 48 hours after the first pill, you take the second medication (depending on your personal preference and schedule, usually comfortably at home).
- How it works: This active ingredient causes the uterus to contract and gently expel the tissue.
- What you feel: Bleeding and cramping typically begin within a few hours after taking the medication. They are similar to a heavy menstrual period and may occasionally be accompanied by mild nausea or circulation reactions.
Aftercare and Safety
- Follow-up Examination: Approximately 10 to 14 days after the treatment, a follow-up appointment takes place at our practice. Using ultrasound, we confirm that the abortion is complete and without complications.
- Safety: This method is highly effective, with a success rate of over 95%. Since neither anesthesia nor surgery (curettage) is required, the risk of injury to the uterus is minimal.
No Long Wait Times
At our practice, we offer appointments daily, which can often be arranged at short notice. The best way to book is via our online platform or by contacting us by phone.

Yes, absolutely. The concern that a medical abortion could impair future fertility is a common fear. However, medical research clearly proves that there are no negative long-term effects on your ability to conceive. In fact, it is theoretically possible to become pregnant again in the very next cycle.
Of course. We understand how crucial discretion is to you. All personal data and information are handled with the highest level of confidentiality and fully protected.
- Pain: After taking the second medication (prostaglandin), cramp-like abdominal discomfort frequently occurs. However, this can be managed very effectively with well-tolerated, effective pain relievers, which is why timely intake is recommended. Some women even experience the process almost pain-free.
- Reliability: The worry that the medication (Mifegyne®) might fail is usually rooted in understandable emotional tension rather than medical reality. Statistically, a medical abortion is successful in about 95% to 98% of cases, making it an extremely reliable treatment option.
There is no universal "right" or "wrong." All available options are backed by years of medical experience and are considered very safe, highly effective, and low in side effects. Ultimately, the decision on the right path for you is made individually during a confidential consultation with us, in alignment with your personal life situation.
Sex is generally possible again once the bleeding has stopped—usually after about one week. However, to minimize the risk of infection, it is recommended to refrain from sexual intercourse during this phase. Please also remember to use reliable contraception right away, as ovulation can occur again shortly after.
